Volvo Penta 200 hp 2017 4Winns

I just recently picked our boat up for the season. I brought it to get gas but it wouldn't take any even though the gauge read close to empty. I brought it to the marina next door and again it would not take any gas, They said bring it in monday and we will check the gas gauge/sensor. So I took the boat out for about two hours cruising the lake. I came back to home and took it out for a quick "speed test" before I put it on the buoy. It started to back fire and sputter. It started to slow down and eventually coming to a stop and stalling out. I turn the key and nothing happens. The power for the trim and accessory light works fine.
But won't turn over at all. I would say alternator but would that cause backfiring? Also if I did run out of gas the engine would still turn over, correct?

I'm at a loss. Any insight would be appreciated
