Bad trolling motor or batteries

by Adam Pease
(Oswego, Kansas)

I have a older motor guide trolling motor and it works great in the morning but after about four hours of use it seems like the batteries are dead. It moves really slow when i get done fishing the rest of the day at a slow speed bring my boat home. I wait a couple of days and test the batteries and on the 24 volt side it shows about 17 volts could it be a bad trolling motor or the batteries?

trolling motor speed problem
by: nelson

I have minn kota maxum 74# thrust that jumped to high randomly also, I found that the little white flat wire that runs from the speed control switch to the control board had a short and the only way to fix it is to replace control board which cost 185.00, I just bought one for mine, hope this helps you

Minn Kota Maxxum jumps to full power
by: Gary

I have a brand new Maxxum Pro 80# with the same problem. No matter what the throttle setting is, it will randomly jump to full power on its own.

If you figure out what the problem is, I'd sure like to know what to do about it.

thanks,
gary

how to fix
by: Anonymous

They wired it wrong in the head of the trolling motor. You will need to take the cap off the head and switch the 2 wires. Same thing happened to me. The angle of your foot pedal will need to be adjusted to because you will now have your foot at a straight up or down angle after the wire switch. Very uncomfortable.

trolling motor wiring

by Joel
(Texarkana, AR)

I recently purchased a used boat that needs some wiring repair. I have a 12/24 volt foot control Motorguide. I also have two foot switches mounted in the front deck. There are two toggle switches mounted in the front of the boat wired to the trolling motor. One 3 way to toggle between 12v, 12/24v, and charge. another 3 way marked charge/hand control (top) and foot switch (bottom) middle not identified. some of these wires were disconnected when I got the boat. I need help in reconnecting these wires so everything works properly. Thanks in advance to anyone who can solve this. Joel

Did you ever get an answer to this? The 3-way toggle for my tm fell apart the other day and now we can figure out which way to wire it on the 6 blades!
Thanks

trolling motor battery

by Chuck Amato
(Tewksbury MA.)

My problem is my back. I have a small fishing boat that I carry in my pickup to my favorites ponds and lakes, but my battery is too heavy for me now.Can I buy and use a small tractor or lawn mower battery for my trolling motor? I only need it to get out a little and then I stop and fish. I wouldn't be using it for long periods of time. Thanks for any help on this I have oars in the boat also.

Minn Kota V2
by: Cathi

Update to my original comment from earlier this week. My husband disconnected the "electrical" connectors and both ends are "blue-green". Using electric clean and pipe cleaning brush will try to get rid of the corrosion. We are the second owner of this boat (used the boat three times). Did an initial "spraying" and believe it or not it "zooms" the prop with the variable speed. He will continue cleaning and hopefully we solved our own problem. We are "newbies" to boating and everyday is a new experience.!

12/24V Trolling Motor Wiring

I have a 12 volt trolling motor in my Skeeter. I was confused when I looked at the wiring because it appeared that they were connected in series for a 24 volt. I checked and did find out it was 12/24. However, I want to just wire it for 12 volt, and hook 2 in parallel for it. Can I do that with that setup? Is it just a matter of disconnecting the 24 V lead, and going from the 12? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

trolling motor question

by andy
(phoenix az)

i'm just wondering, because i'm intrested in buying a little 4 person inflatable boat with a trolling motor included with the boat that has 2 speed fwd.n rev....is 3200-3600rpm with 7.7lbs to 12.1 lbs thrust is that a good motor to atleast pull 4 people on that weighs roughly under 200lbs each of us, i mean i dont want to go really slow, i know its a trolling motor but should i invest in a better motor with a better torque in it, so i can go a little faster? what to you recommend?

wiring harness for trolling motor

by Emmett Johnson
(Vidalia, Ga. USA)

I have a Freedom Twin Troller fishing boat that has two trolling motors built in underneath the middle of the boat. The harnesses are connected to a battery in rear of boat and the harnesses for each motor run through a groove to the front of the boat. The harnesses have a plug with 4 prongs on the top and 2 prongs on bottom part of plug. This is plugged into a metal pedal that can make the boat operate like a zero turn lawn mower.
The pedal on the left will not operate the rolling motor on the left with harness on the left. When I connect the harnesses connector from the right side of the boat it will run the motor an the left side. So I know the electric motor runs. Within the connector there is two positive wires, one to supply power to the controller and one from the controller to the trolling motor. There are two negative wires going in to the controller one of which goes to the trolling motor. I have used an amp meter on the wires going in and they show twelve volts. I have used it on the two wires going from the controller to the trolling motor and got 12 volts also. This on the connector for the left side of the boat. No matter what I do the left side controller will not work on the left side trolling motor. none please advise.

2000 Minn Kota power drive makes a humming noise when turned on at low power and speed

by Matt
(Lake Lanier, Cumming,GA (Atlanta area))

I have a 2000 minn kota poverdrive 50lb that I have completely rebuilt the lower end of it.( new lower housing, brushes, seals, bearings, ect). I have also ditched the foot pedal and converted it to hand control by wiring a 40amp
10-50 volt pwm DC motor speed control in the head and wiring directly to the head eliminating the electric steering and battery gauge. It works great but at low power and speed it makes a humming noise until I turn the dail up. Any ideas?

by brett irwin
(glouster ohio)

i have a new powerdrive 55(12volt) with us2 and 54 inch shaft it is a new motor on a new pre-wired lund boat and new marine car quest battery,, IT HAS BEEN THE SAME PROBLEM you are on the water doing your thing and it stops turning left, you can try it and it may work and than it may not work for a hour and than it will work ,when it quits you can try and try anything to try to get it to go and nothing works ...when it will start,, when it stops turning left every function works but the turning left,,, i take it off and take it to the closest repair shop that is 85 miles from my house and we cant seem to duplicate the problem,,one shop on a out of town trip SOLD me a new foot pedal aasy. because he thought it was the problem he had the whole boat and could not make it fail,, i bought the pedal to try to salvage my vacation,, this was the second vacation that it ruined .. i take great care of my stuff it sits in a heated garage ,, the repair shop has put a new main board, new connecters at the main power to the main board,, its always the same it wont turn left and we cant make it fail on the bench or on the boat either.. i tryed to get minnkota to give me a complete new motor but they havent yet ,the repair shops have been nice enough but that still dosent get my motor fixed ,, ie-mailed minnkota and told them i would even pay a couple hundred more to up grade to a terrova,, with no responce....and i sent them a bill for three vacations screwed up and gas money ,cabin rentals no responce is a lawer next ,,this has all happened from purchase date of 2\27\11 to 10\15\11 and contuned with another vacation day screwed up today3\16\12.... ps they have a 2 year warranty???????

Ranger 175C Trolling Motor Wiring

I just bought a Ranger 175C that does not have a trolling motor. It has two leads in the front and I would like to install a 36volt pound thrust MinnKota Trolling motor. I noticed that it looks like under/inside the console there is a switch with two leads to hook up to a battery as well as a battery with a switch in the back of the boat. I was wondering how a person should go about wiring in a 36volt motor into that system?

No power to Trolling to trolling motor and no power to bilge pump and no power to aerator

by Bentley Pearson
(Pinson, Al)

82 Ranger 1600V
Got to the lake Saturday, motor turns great, trim good. Plugged in Trolling motor, nothing. Checked bilge, nothing, checked the live well, nothing. Ended up going home. New main battery, recharged "everything else" battery. I know it has to be a fuse or breaker or something simple. Any ideas? I am going to try and find the manual online for this model and see if that will point me in the right direction. I am not paying a boat man to do anything again.
Thanks!!!

Minn Kota 2 HP E drive charge indicator problems?

by John Lake
(Phoenix, AZ)

I have a Minn Kota 2 HP E drive on my pontoon boat.
The charging system is a ProPak IV 4 bank charger charging the four batteries for the 48 VDC motor.

Recently, after sufficient charging time, my charge indicator shows only a partial charge (between 1/2 and 3/4), but my multi-meter tells me that each battery is 12.5 - 12.7 VDC when I unplug the charger, and 50.5 VDC or so across all four batteries. Even putting a load on the batteries (about 1/3 throttle still tied to the dock), all batteries showed over 12 VDC.

Am I wrong to assume that batteries and charging system are doing what I am asking them to do, and the fault is probably with what is being reported by the charge indicator?

Thanks for any input... :)

John
