Suzuki, DF90,2011

Engine runs fine until about 2800 rpms, then begins to run rough and won't accelerate over 3200 rpms. Doesn't really sputter, just, "porpoises" in rpms, shaking the boat. Have changed fuel, fuel filter, and spark plugs but didn't help. Thanks!

I'm wondering if your engine thinks it's in neutral
by: Doug

When you say that your engine RPM is porpoising, it's making me think the ECM is protecting the engine from overspin.

I have a 2002 DF115, and I learned the hard way that, aside from the neutral switch at the remote control, mine also a neutral switch at the motor. If that switch is malfunctioning (i.e., staying closed all the time), the engine will start, and the transmission will engage, but the ECM will *think* you're in neutral and regulate maximum RPM.

Just a thought, but as I was reading your description, it reminded me of what happens if you press the neutral button on the remote control and try to raise the RPM too high. In that situation, the ECM is again intervening.
