Sailing in Antigua. Great stop, loads of tourists, visit to heritage Quay, Nelsons Dockyard, Great Bird Island, swim with placid stingrays, Barbuda caves, the frigate bird sanctuary. National dish is fungie, which is a cornmeal dish, also try pepper pot, the saltfish and ducana which are sweet potato dumplings. Lobster and red snapper fish dishes are great washed down with ice cold Wadadli Antiguan beer. There are a myriad of small markets around St Johns.  Sailing in Antigua is fun.

Sailing in Antigua Provisioning 

Horizons/Epicurean Supermarkets.  (English Harbour). Now the largest store in Antigua, The main store is just off Friars Hill Road and the other is at Jolly Harbour Resort and Marina, which is convenient straight off your boat.  Importing a big range of fresh produce from the US with a lot of frozen foods and even a sushi counter if you are not into making your own.  Sourced globally from the US and Europe with a good fresh meat counter carrying A grade chickens, and USDA beef from the USA. They also carry a range of UK supermarket Waitrose products.  Stores have an inhouse bakery. Opening hours are 0600 to 2300 hrs, and so open every day of the week. 

Perry Bay Supermarket (St Johns). On Perry Bay Main Road, large supermarket with a big range of meat, produce and so on.

Christos Supermarket and Cash and Carry. (St Johns).  A good range do product at reasonable prices, popular with locals. Located High Street, Carnival Gardens, Fort Road and Cassada Gardens.

Gourmet Basket Supermarket. (St Johns). Popular with locals and pricing is reasonable. Full range of quality meats, fruit and veg, frozen produce and more. Located just 5 minutes from the airport located within the Island Provision complex.  Open Monday to Thursday 0800 to 2000hrs, Friday and Saturday 0800 to 2100hrs, and Sun 0800 to 1500hrs.

Bailey's Supermarket. (Falmouth Harbour). Good market with fresh fruit and veg.  Open daily 0800 to 2000 hrs. Closed on Sundays.

Malones Food Store and Creole Restaurant (English Harbour). Range of affordable fresh produce and supplies.   Open Monday to Thursday: 8am to 7pm, Friday: 8am to 5:30, Saturday: 6:30pm to 9:30pm, Sunday: 8am to  6pm. Don’t forget to try the Creole Restaurant specializing in Antiguan cuisine. Contact them on VHF channel 68 for immediate free delivery.

Antigua Markets

Public Market in St Johns Friday and Saturday Morning. Fresh fruit and produce (limes and mango, black pineapple and sugar apples along with a lot of other items and artisan offerings. Also has fresh fish near the bus station. Head to the St Johns Public Fish Market for fresh seafood, and the St Johns Farmers Market for produce. Colesome Farmers Market at Jonas Road in All Saints. There is a Public Meat Market on Market Road in St Johns. You can buy fresh fish straight off the boats at Urlings on Old Road just south of Jolly Harbour, best late mornings and after midday when boats return and fish are all iced up. In English Harbour the boats pull up near the Skullduggery bar and café, and you can buy cleaned and gutted fish off them. Jolly Harbour Market on Saturdays 8 to 12pm, with fresh fruit and veggies as well as fresh fish from Tuna, Mahi Mahi, Snapper and Wahoo, and more. Sometimes organic Antiguan papaya is available. Also you can get arugula, cilantro, salad vegetables and Chines Pak Choi, fresh tomatoes, potatoes, avocado, peppers, eggplants and more such as local honey.  Sailing in Antigua has much to offer.

Antigua Fish Markets

Fresh fish can be had from Rivi’s Fish Plus at the market or call them on Tel No 1-268-7798317 or 7886656.  They are located All Saints Road, in the Mini Complex next to Europa Hardware after the race track.   Visit Rivi’s Ocean Stand on Herbert’s Main Road on Friday and Saturday 10-7pm and offer Grilled Lobster, grilled and fried fresh fish, Lobster stuffed Shellfish and more.

Special Note. All these people work hard to offer this great produce in markets, so rolling up in your designer shoes and sunglasses and your latest model iPhone and then trying to nickle and dime bargain them down to stupidly low prices is really unacceptable. Pay the price and keep food on people’s tables. If you don’t like the price move on elsewhere.

Nico (Ari's Fish Shop). Nico always docks his boat “Goldfin” at Skullduggery in AYC Marina. Always arrives with fish so worth approaching.

Zimbabwe. Not the country but the man.  Supplies fresh local clams, cleaned and prepped, he needs one day’s notice and will deliver to the dock.  He also does smoked fish.  Contact him on +1 268 723 7464

Susie’s Hot Sauce.  It is available in all supermarkets and has become somewhat of an institution, so go visit the showroom and they will even customize source labels to suit your own yacht. How good is that? Sailing in Antigua has many surprises.

LPG/Gas Refills.  The Chandlery, Falmouth Harbour and Bowl Consumer Gas Service in St Johns 

Trash Disposal.  Hosier Delivery. Devon Hosier is located in Nonsuch Bay. He can provide trash disposal for any yacht in Green Island or islands close by. He is also able to supply fresh fish and lobster.
