Mercury 150 2014 4s thermostat advice

Hi. Opened my thermostat housing today and removed thermostat from the retainer and spring to inspect it.

To my surprise the pin was loose from the thermostat it self. (See photolinks - green is just grease)

Thermostat looked ok with a bit of cleaning.
if I insert the pin and test thermostat in hot water it does seem to work (extends >7mm as expect and if cooled and pressed the pin shrinks back in).

Question to someone with experience of this motor/thermostat:
Is it supposed to be in two parts?

I guess the spring would make sure it is compressed until the wax inside is getting hot and extend... but never thought it would be apart.

This is only sold as a kit including the plastic housing so I would like to double check before buying a new.
