3400rpm ping
by: Anonymous

I have the same problem with a rebuilt 92, 5.7 mercruiser. In the shop dyno was very respectable, after install by reputable shop I have developed a ping at 3400 rpm with very poor power response. I have checked timing, plugs, ignition and wiring. purrs like kitten at lower rpm. my next option is to change fuel filters and lines for restrictions. my final option is to change spark module or complete distributor to a HEI unit. My question is what have I missed as a possible problem source?

Bay liner 5.7 pings about 3200 rpm

Took into shop Turn out to be blown head gasket between cilynder 4 and 6 with 2 burnt valves. Rebuilt both heads and replace head gaskets. 3200.00 later it's fixed and she flies!
