Mercruiser 350 5.7 Litre Starter

I have a 1997 Rinker Captiva 212, and am having some starting issues. This boat is new to me, and it started the first day I put it in the water. The next time I went to start it there was no such luck. When I turn the key it seems that the starter engages at first, and then it just spins. Every time I try it again it's the same thing. I took the starter off yesterday and took it to AutoZone for a diagnostic check. It checked out with all green lights, but the guy there told me he has never seen a starter gear move slower. Is a marine starter supposed to move so slow? We took a look as far as we could at the fly wheel, and it appeared to be in ok shape. Any suggestions on what could be the issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.
