Honda BF10 lhu

I am looking to replace my current 2 stroke Mariner 10HP engine and am considering a Honda BF10 recoil start. I know that the Honda has a 12V 6A output alternator but could the output be used to directly charge a 12V battery that I use for the bilge pump. Would there have to be some kind of regulator to prevent overcharging of the battery or could a simple direct connection be made?

you'll definitely need a regulator to prevent overcharging and cooking the battery. It's just not worth the risk. Alternatively trickle charge the battery on solar between boat outings
