Evinrude E50ESLEUS 1997 Lower Unit Rebuild

Rebuilding lower unit. Removed everything except bearings which appear to be good. Replaced the shift dog clutch and reverse gear as it would not go into reverse! Resealed the lower unit and replaced the water pump. The shift linkage, driveshaft, pinion and forward gears are installed correctly. I quadruple checked during assembly. New reverse gear went in fine. I cannot get the bearing carrier back in? Older models had an internal plate with ring sealed bolts to pull against 2 internal snap rings. My motor does not have that. (I wish it did). I get about half way in using every trick I can think of. I am innovative in rigging solutions. I cannot get this thing back together. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong?
