2001 Yamaha F25LTRA

by Jim
(Marathon, FL (at the moment))

Some days, runs perfect

Other days, runs great, shut down for 3 hours, then won't restart - appears to be flooded but sounds like no spark or fire. Opened throttle and cranked, let it sit and cranked, cranked - eventually restarted and ran fine

Next day, runs great for about 1 hour, mix of low speed and high speed operation. Then at mid RPM's sounded like only one cylinder was firing, then both, then one, then finally started running fine again.

Purchased new plugs today and will install this afternoon. Thinking maybe coil pack (one for both cylinders on this engine) may be failing (when heating up)? Would this be #1 most likely suspect or CDI? (or other)?

Fuel pumps have a very thin rubber bellow inside and can get a tiny hole or punture you will not see any leak

Thank you for your assistance.

Well the Yamaha operators manual specified NGK Plug BPR6EB-9 and that's what I bought. Unfortunately, inside the motor it says BPR6EA-9, so I have to go back and exchange them for the correct plug.

In the meantime, I poured some Mercury fuel system cleaner in the tank at 2x the recommended dosage and let it set for 24 hours (after making sure I ran it long enough to get some in the engine).

Motor started and ran perfectly all day yesterday.

Interesting that you mention fuel pump. Reasoning? I don't see any fuel leaking, but never ready to rule anything out.

I will run the boat again today and see what happens.

IN ORDER OF CHEAPEST FIX
1-try new plugs
2-try new fuel pump
3-clean carbs
4- new coils
5-last and most expensive CDI
