1997 28 HP Evinrude Outboard

Engine always start good. After running it full throttle for about 15 - 20 minutes, it slows down sharply to half speed or less. I have changed the two spark plug cables. Plugs look OK. It appears to be running on two cylinders. I've tested running each cylinder individually and each starts and runs separately. I think it may acting up when the engine gets warmed up. I am not sure what causes it to abruptly slow to half speed. Any suggestions for repair, other than taking it to a repair shop, would be much appreciated.

Thermostat - Does it have one?
by: Anonymous

I know nothing about a Thermostat on the engine. Sounds like a probable cause but I never knew it had one, what its purpose is and where it is located.

Doesn't appear to be fuel related.
by: Anonymous

Because the engine always starts great and after it warms up it cuts out abruptly. That indicates to me that it is not a fuel problem. Also, when it slows down, I add fuel spray directly in the carb and it does not speed up at all. I could be wrong but I didn't think a heated engine would relate to fuel problems.

Have you replaced the thermostat? O/H may be the cause. Correct fuel/oil ratio?
