1988 Force 85hp

I started to replace the water pump impeller but when I removed the lower unit I found the driveshaft spline seal and retainer were missing probaably from the last time the impeller was replaced. Since these parts are hard to find and the engine runs just fine without them should I worry? Phil from Bothwell.
