Are You Looking for a Yacht-Sailing-Boat Marine Electronics Service Technician?

ARE YOUR LOOKING FOR A YACHT-SAILING-BOAT SERVICE TECHNICIAN FOR YOUR MARINE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS EQUIPMENT?

Looking for a service person or company isn’t easy. You have to search through the local business directory phone books, ask around the local marina, and then you start the task of finding someone both qualified and reputable. The best worldwide marine electrical and electronics service directory for Yacht-Sailing-Boat.

The following list is of marine electricians, marine electronics technicians and companies, or other lesser qualified electrical persons who come highly commended. Genuine qualified Marine Electricians will often have a merchant marine or naval background, and will probably have many years sea service behind them

They will also have an experience based understanding of the environmental factors of marine electrical installations and will be capable and qualified at both AC and DC systems, as well as a reasonable level of electronics ability. Beware of automotive electricians claiming to be marine electricians, they are not and most good ones doing marine work will not hide that fact.

There are some very good automotive electrical tradesmen doing marine work, and many are included in the list. Go on recommendation if at all possible. (ask them if they own a boat!) Beware also the domestic electrician who makes similar claims. Again there are a few good tradesmen or journeymen around who have a more industrial background, and will also do a very good job.

If you are getting AC work done ask to see a license or some qualification, if things go wrong it may raise insurance issues. The old adage of "Buyer Beware" applies, get references or check their background if at all possible. It's your life in the balance. The Secret to Getting the Best From Your Service Technician

How to Assist Service Persons. I remember an episode when a yacht arrived in from an extended Pacific cruise, and the skipper (a lovely Doctor fellow) told me that his radar had been out for several months, and that he was only able to get the display partially working but no screen image. To really upset his day, I then went to the stern mounted scanner, and simply switched on a local power switch, somehow it had been knocked into the off position. All this took 5 minutes! Imagine the poor chaps reaction, he simply had forgotten to check it. Grown men do cry. And no! I didnt even charge him and we then had a cold beer and talked about his voyage, good payment! Boats-fishing or boats sailing, use this resource or recommend someone, the same problems often require expert support.

Consider the following points before you call a service person

1. Did you operate the equipment properly. Read the manual again and go back to basics. Only when you are sure that you have operated the equipment properly and it doesn't work should you call the serviceman.

2. Are all the plugs in and power on. It is amazing how many people forget to plug in an aerial or forget to put the power on. If the power is on at the breaker and not at the equipment double check that the circuit connection on the back of the switchboard is not disconnected. Check that the equipment fuse has not ruptured. Check the obvious.

3.Blame Yourself First! Ask yourself what you were doing immediately prior to the fault. A great number of faults occur immediately after working on often unrelated systems. The inadvertent disturbance of connections can occur so check. This is the fingers factor!

4. What is the Fault? Write down clearly the fault and the situation when the unit failed. If a profile can be built up it may point to some other factors. Not only will it assist the service person but it may assist you in resolving the problem and avoiding a callout.

5. Is it Fixed Yest? Don't keep asking the servicemen whether he has fixed or located the fault ten minutes after arrival, not only do you ruin the concentration of a man that you are paying for, but it can lead to sharp verbal exchanges, especially when he is jammed in some tight space. You are paying for the time, add time, pay more!

6. Keep a good technical file on board. If possible obtain copies of all the technical manuals, as service people cannot carry, or get every different manual. It will save you money if you give him the information, as time will be saved.

7. Clean up the area to be worked on. It is quite unfair to expect service people to work on filthy engines, and dirty bilges. If you want or don't mind grime tracked through the boat, then ignore this advice, and if the fellow is good he simply may decline to come back again.

8. Have a good tool kit ready. It is impossible to carry on to every boat a complete tool set. Any assistance like this is greatly appreciated. Make sure your flashlights work, and make sure that where access to equipment is through lockers, that they are emptied and clear. If he has to keep going back to his van its costing you money!

9. Refreshment Time Don't offer beer and coffee until after the job is finished. It is greatly appreciated but it doesn't get the job done.

10. Is everyone awake? Make sure your crew are dressed for early morning service calls, as it is not fun to be greeted by hungover crew members when troubleshooting or tracing cable runs, and the crew don't like it either.

11.Is everyone dressed? Hormone levels can overload when scantily clad "mates" throw back the covers or appear dripping wet out of showers. Sigh! it does happen sometimes! Please get the ladies into clothes, but not into "spray-on" Lycra swimsuits, we just can't concentrate on the problem. Distraction is so destructive. I like it however and you pay though!

12. Picking up the Technician If collecting a service person from shore, make sure you both know the correct location. I have been left standing many times due to confusion about the pick up point. Please bale the dingy out first and have a towel to sit on. In most cases the tools and spares need somewhere dry as well.

13. Define the Job and stick to it Don't go and get a job done and then try and blame the serviceman for all the other electrical problems and ills of the boat that exist. This is a common method used by some of the more undesirable types floating around to avoid paying accounts. BEFORE YOU START! Write down clearly the job you want done, and pay for the job. If you do not, I can assure you word travels fast and you may end up without help when you want it.

14. Do not sail off without settling your account. Some do, and I assure you, world-wide, that people will not only have you arrested at the next port, plus nail a writ to your mast, but you may end up losing your yacht to pay accounts and end up in jail for your efforts. I know because I have initiated such actions I extreme cases. Marine technicians and electricians do not just get mad, they get even!

15. Paying The Bill There are quite a number of yachtsmen who have no qualms about paying $80 call out fees and $80/hour for a washing machine mechanic to fix a $1000 machine. When it comes to paying an account from a highly qualified marine electrical/electronics serviceman on a $200,000 yacht they think $60 an hour is exorbitant to fix essential and very expensive equipment where only hourly rates and no traveling times or call out fees are often charged. Think about it!

So did they do a good job? Then tell me and list them here! If they didn’t please you and they are on my directory tell me and we will take them off. Your call!
