Where to start applying with little or no real experience?

by Darren
(Nairn, Scotland, UK.)

Having just been informed that I will be made redundant in 3 months time has finally given me the push to start looking in to how to get a position working offshore.
It is an area that I wish I had looked into more 10 years ago when I started working for my current employer, however am now looking at it in a fully committed way.
Please could people offer some advice or specific areas of research that I should look into so as I have at least got a better understanding, and don't fall into the traps that others appear to be looking into, i.e. paying an agency at an initial stage!
I would be willing to train in other areas first if required to bolster any real opportunities, but where to begin is a real brainteaser!
Many thanks in advance.
