voltage spike

by Jeff
(Brandon, Florida)

While running the main engine (4108 Perkins) & the generator (Phaser) at the same time the voltage spikes to 17V. The Ray Marine auto pilot control head in the cockpit gives a warning beep and says low voltage. Never had this problem till a couple of months ago.

ANSWER
Sounds like alternator fault, not sure why that would be when both run together but 17 volts is way to high and will damage things, check alternator regulator or one diode in rectifier bridge faulty and as to why alarm is low voltage, thats a mystery to me
