trouble shifting boat into forward

I have a 24' bayliner cierra sunbridge w/5.7 omc motor and OD. i have to manually push on the shifting cable at the bracket where the cables are located above the motor to get the outdrive in forward otherwise it will not go in gear and will just sound like the gears are barley making contact and the boat will mot move
