starter solenoid burning out

by John
(New York)

Any ideas on what would cause a starter solenoid to burn out? I have a 1991 chris craft 5.8 ford engine. Boat runs great except for this issue. I have gone through 3 starter solenoids. When I put a new one in, the starter works but continues to run after the key is released. It appears that there are some contacts welding together inside the solenoid. I should note that the engine was removed on this boat and when replaced the main plug connectors were removed and the engine was hardwired to the control harness.
I've done numerous tests and the only issue I seem to have located is that the red lead from the starter is grounded.
