shift cable

by kevin
(Sarasota, FLorida)

I am installing new shift and throttle cables on my 1997 Johnson 115 hp outboard. The black piece (locking barrel?) on the shift cable broke at the remote. the shifter (drive, reverse arm) at the motor works without the cable, but not well. no water in the lower unit and just greased the whole engine. will the arm for forward and reverse loosen after some use? the boat has sat for most of its life and now my family and I would like to put it to good use.
