GALILEO IS COMING!
The European GPS system of the same name was given the go ahead yesterday and will offer an alternative to the US Defense based system (US administration has been somewhat annoyed at this development)and the European network will have orbiting satellites in place to begin operations after 2008 with first test/demo one in orbit next year. Galileo will be interoperable with the US GPS and Russias GLONASS, and will improve both accuracy and reliability of navigation and timing signals. The final constellation will comprise 30 satellites which is double that of the US Global Positioning System, and this gives significantly improved signal quality. SIMRAD New Products
Simrad have come out with some great new products . First is the NavStation series of electronic navigation equipment to suit sail and power. There are 3 different screen sizes, the CX34 (7-inch), CX44 (10.4-inch) and the CX54 (15-inch) to choose from. You can select any combination of GPS chartplotter, echosounder and radar all on the same screen. Great stuff! These new units also provide very accurate tidal flow data, full screen images with aerial views of ports and harbours, along with adjacent land and sea data for navigation route planning. Also Simrad launched 2 new radar antennas (the DX45 and the DX60) to go with the NavStation range. The principal innovation of these DX radomes is the new technology known as MultiVision. This allows a view of 2 separate radars to be displayed on a single screen.

NMEA AWARDS
US company Digital Antenna makes antenna for cellular communication for both marine and land-based markets. They have been received 2 awards for the Best Marine Antenna for the 529-VW 8 VHF antenna, and the DA4000 Direct Connect 3W cellular amplifier also won the Marine Specialty Product award for the second straight year. I guess they must be pretty good, and anyone with feedback to convince me try out one on my boat?
