Oil Rig career change wanted

by Mark Middleton
(Sunderland/United Kingdom.)

I am Mark a 36 year old telecoms Rigger. I am a class 1 Rigger/climber and have worked for British Telecom for the last 10 years. I first started as a customer servive engineer and then after 2 years i progressed onto become a microwave radio and rigging engineer installing and maintaining microwave radio links for BT's core and access radio network. Due to what BT call head count challenges and no new contracts i now find myself trying to find myself a new job within BT. At present i am on a secondment in an office doing admin work.
I am now looking to find new oppurtunities outside of BT and hopefully to utilise my telecoms and rigging skills elsewhere. At present i do not have the oil sector requirements with regards to survival and HUET certificates. Before i spend money on obtaining these i would like to try and find out whether i could gain employment within this industry with my skill set.

ANSWER
There are lots of climbing opportunities with specialist abseil companies such as South Seas Inspection (SSI)http://www.southseas-int.com/ who want people now and also K2 and others, go talk to them right away, do search in google, what are you waiting for?
