GOOD NEWS FROM C-MAP!

The electronic chart manufacturer C-Map has just launched some new navigation software that is purpose designed to display C-Map cartography on your PDA or Smart Phones. This is called C-eMap and will let the user zoom in and out with just a simple touch of a screen, and even better your waypoints can be simply entered directly into your PDA. The displayed info includes depth contour lines, buoyage, light-houses, tidal data, as well as port and marina services, and all this cleverly contained within the SD card. C-eMap will function with most modern PDAs and Smart Phones that are running Pocket PC 2003 or Mobile Windows, but a GPS position source is required to use all of the navigation features. Some PDA models do come with an integral GPS and others will require a Bluetooth-enabled GPS receiver.

No more sounder thru hulls for aluminum boats. Vexilar's has launched the AlumaDucer which is the world's first transducer to transmit through aluminium hulls with no signal loss. The transducer will automatically compensate for the loss of signal strength that occurs when a standard transducer is mounted inside an aluminium hull.

B&G

B and G is about to launch their new RemoteVision wireless autopilot/instrument control system. What is remote vision? It is smaller than a palm PC and features a full LCD graphical screen and simple intuitive four-button control. It also uses wireless technology to transmit and receive data from B&G's h2000 Hercules and Hydra pilots as well as the instruments. All of the instrument data can be viewed on the RemoteVision screens anywhere on a boat. Additional to this is the ability to change parameters and data viewed on the instruments at the helm and other positions. The system also incorporates an integral 20 degree gimbaled fluxgate compass to provide real time accurate bearings on any point. A really great safety feature is the alarm answer mode. If the Hercules or Hydra system senses that the boat had deviated heading off course the controller allows acceptance of alarms and to reset the autopilot parameters. B&G is now part of Simrad.

GPS Trouble ahead?

Well, we all thought that the threat of GPS disruption was gone. The latest news is that the US has once again reviving plans to temporarily shut down both the US GPS system of global positioning satellites and any similar systems that are operated by other countries (Glonass and Galileo) in the event of a major threat to the US (threat being next to anything I guess) so everyone best practise those traditional navigation methods just in case.
