I used to own a warrranty repair shop for Motorguide until they were bought out.. The wiring you are referring to feeds the variable speed control transistors setup in the foot. And there is a extremely good chance that your Dad's is not wired wrong.. The variable speed unit is burned up. That is their NO 1 problem .That's why they call it bypass mode because it bypasses the variable speed unit. Quite frankly, they were junk. There were 3 revisions on that unit in just one year and because of that I cannot help you with the wiring. Get on the Web site and find the closest repair facility. Next time buy the competition. I dealt with both and the other one did not have HALF the problems motorguide does
