Mercury xr4 150 1989

When I go to start the engine cold, the starter cuts out after turning a couple of times. I have to keep doing this several times before it will start and keep running. When warm it does not do this or when I use the muffs at home on it. Could it be the starter solenoid?

Check the solenoid, check the solenoid control connection which often make poor contact, that is the wires that activate the solenoid coil. Remove clean and refasten the main starter cable connections as even slightly poor contact introduces a high voltage drop and poor or non starting. In some cases the internal contact part of a solenoid can be stuck, so if possible open and check, see it moves freely.

Xr4 starting problem

Replaced the starter already. I was thinking that it might be the solinoid or just not starting it correctly.

I would first check the connection at the battery. Don't finger tighten the cables use a wrench. If thats not it check all the other cables, if they are tight then it could just be a coincidence about the timing and a bad starter.
