New Lights
The IBEX show always sees some innovative new systems and equipment. The latest in energy saving lighting comes from ABI with the MR-11 and MR-16 Cold Cathode light bulbs. The very bright patent-pending bulbs are designed to replace the Halogen or Xenon lamps and will last over 10,000 hours and draw only 1/4 Amp of power! The Cold Cathode bulb outputs a cool white light which is perfect for reading or general area lighting. They operate at 90 degrees F which is both cooler and safer than most other hot halogen type bulbs, with an equivalent light output of a conventional 60-watt light bulb. The bulbs are designed to fit any light fixture using an MR-16 or MR-11 Halogen or Xenon bulb, and many fixtures using a G-4 bulb. I will be trialing them on my own boat very quickly.!

HI-TECH POWER DISTRIBUTION
I have long been a big fan of the very good quality E-T-A circuit breakers and have installed a lot of them. The latest news is that UK branch of the German circuit breaker company, E-T-A, has come out with a new CANbus controlled power distribution system. With ever increasing systems complexity and the high current required to power systems, the traditional electrical system is getting somewhat stressed. The electrical cable looms that I have installed are really considerable, and these create many negative factors such as physical installation issues, RFI and noise issues, voltage drop and more. The E-T-A Powerbus system essentially consists of power nodes that are distributed around the boat so as to reduce the long runs of heavy current wiring that are now so typical. Readers of my books know that I promote this distributed power concept, it is the only way to go. The advantages of this system are an ability to interface with any other CANbus sensor or component. Operation is carried out using touch screen displays or conventional switch panels. Bookmark this blog for further yachts and motorboat technology news!

NEW ELECTRIC COOKING GEAR
I used to have an Origo spirit stove, now look what they have. They have ceramic cooktops with models one, two and three-burner models (Origo 3100, 3200 and 3300). They are available as built in powered by 230V/50Hz or 120V/60Hz mains power. They use special Hi-Light heating elements that give fast almost instant heat and even distribution.
