Lightning protection

I am restoring a 1981 Litton trawler. I want to use the existing mast (about 12 feet in length; placed on the sundeck). I am hearing from local experts that I don't need to do this or don't need the mast to do it. I think that I can only get a decent protection cone by leaving the mast in place. Any opinions?
