NMEA and ABYC MERGER?

This week The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) and National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) announced that they would be forming an alliance that would offer reciprocal recognition of each organization's "scope of responsibility" for developing standards within the marine industry. About time and at last some sanity is appearing that will offer consistent and ONE set of standards, CONGRATULATIONS, this is great news for all boaters. In a similar display of logical thinking and common sense it was announced that the ABYC would be responsible for electrical system standards and NMEA would be responsible for electronic component installation standards, or electronic equipment that interfaces or is connected to the electrical system. It was stated that under this agreement, the NMEA and ABYC will reference each other's standards in their respective publications as well as in policy and procedure alignment and that they would work together to provide industry training and professional development. Great news again it is hoped that perhaps somewhere along the way they either merge standards completely.

Innovative Technician Rewards Scheme

Teleflex Marine are the US manufacturer of electronic control systems, and they have now announced that they have the 2005/06 TeleflexREWARDS programme implemented. The scheme rewards registered technicians for properly installing Teleflex components onboard on vessels and this allows installing technicians to earn points that can be used against prizes when they install any new steering system, controls, gauge packages or any other Teleflex or Sierra marine product. The marketing director stated "Marine technicians deserve to be rewarded for the hard work they do every day," and this is strongly supported here as well.

Boat Show New Gear

The boat show season has been in full swing and regrettably I couldn't make Annapolis this year however annual Innovation Awards at the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) were made and one I really support is that going to Micronet Systems for the Tacktick in the OEM Electronics and Electronics Systems category. It has a new range of wireless, solar powered electronics that use unique, low power, high speed radio communication protocol to produce electronics that are wireless, waterproof and use zero power consumption. The claim that the installation savings alone makes the system worth it is absolutely true. No more pulling down the overhead, or running wires down the mast or deck transits etc and no additional circuits to supply power. Really great developments and given connections are one of the greatest cause of instrument malfunctions reliability is way up. Well worth considering for any sailing boat. In the best Electrical category the Safe-CO Gasoline Generator by Westerbeke won. The Safe-CO is a new line of electronically fuel injected gasoline-fueled marine gensets that reduce CO emissions by well over 99 per cent compared with typical carbureted generators.
