New Generators

My favorite generator Northern Lights has launched the new W-Series of generators, that range in outputs from 8kW-33 kW. They are designed for smaller boats and they replace the K-Series with a new auxiliary stator winding that has a stable power output to the Automatic Voltage Regulator. This prevents the typical dips, surges and sags that occur under varying load conditions and is ideal for serious power users on larger cruising yachts and motor boats. KOHLER GENERATOR NEWS!

Kohler Power Systems has just launched a new 9kW diesel generator that incorporates an EPA Tier II compliant engine made by Yanmar. The 9EOZD/7EFOZD will replace the 8EOZD/6.5EFOZD models which only had a Tier I compliant diesel engine. It has greater power capability with a smaller package size than earlier models. Kohler marine generators have advanced digital diagnostics and improved bulkhead connections. The Kohler Advanced Digital Control (ADC) system is also able to output more precise voltage and frequency regulation which is good news.

NEW DC AIR CONDITIONING?

There are some great new products and this one goes onto my wish list. Glacier Bay, have launched the DC Breeze which is a unique 12 or 24 volt DC marine air conditioning. Unlike problematic inverter based systems, the DC Breeze uses the advanced Glacier Bay developed Masterflux brushless DC compressor to provide a true 12 or 24 volt stand alone DC air conditioning system. Drawing 48 amps at 12 volts, including the water pump, it provides 5,000 btus of cooling and up to 11 gallons or 42 liters per day of dehumidifying. This makes it more efficient and more reliable than inverter based technology. DC Breeze is the perfect solution for boaters who want the comfort of air conditioning but don't have room for, or can't justify the cost of, a generator. For larger boats that do have generators, DC Breeze makes it possible to sleep through the hottest, muggiest nights without the heat and noise of running the genset overnight.

Fuel Cell News

I am a great fan of forthcoming fuel cell technology for yachts and power boats. The generation of energy which is environmentally friendly, low on vibration, noiseless and efficient has to be a winner. The engine manufacturers MTU-Friederichshafen have advised that they will suspend research and development programme into fuel cell technology for marine applications. They say suggested market research that the marine industry is not yet ready for fuel cell technology, with little response from boat builders. MTU unveiled a 12m prototype yacht powered by the PEM proton exchange membrane fuel cell system named the Cool Cell. There are others doing great work in this area and let's all hope that some one in the boatbuilding business gets some imagination and comes up with an electric propulsion and fuel cell based system.

Whale Pump News

It is great to hear that Whale Water Systems have got National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Component Type Acceptance Program for the Gulper pump range. I was one of the first to install these on my boat and have 2 on present boat, one for shower waste and other for bilge, they really are great and come with a strong buy recommendation. They are compact, high-capacity, fast and efficient. After endless problems with submersible pumps the Whale Gulper Pumps have no impellers to clog or burn and better still will run dry without damage. Whale products are original equipment on leading boat brands, including Sea Ray, Bayliner, Beneteau, Catalina, Four Winns, Bavaria, Jeanneau, Fairline and Sunseeker to name a few. SOLVING SHOWER PUMP GRAY WATER PROBLEMS

Every boat I have ever owned has shower pump reliability problems. Traditionally the submersible bilge pump and float switch setup clog up with soap and hair and my present boat is no exception. This coming week I get to stay on board for a couple of weeks and first on my job list is to replace with a Whale Gulper pump. I had one of these on a previous boat when they came out and they are brilliant. It is just so annoying cleaning and unjamming these systems and I will be doing a page on this and some other great Whale products, one being WaterWeb. Stay tuned.

Air Conditioning News

Not the right time to be talking about refrigeration and air conditioning equipment however Dometic in the US who market the excellent Cruisair air conditioning systems have launched a new digital control system for Cruisair air conditioners. The SMXht is an ergonomically designed keypad with display unit in all sorts of aesthetically appealing colours. The nitty-gritty bit that I like is that a user is able select the operation mode, make set point adjustments and control the fan speed. The microprocessor-based control system has some 20 programmable functions that also include the ability to fine-tune system performance. These functions include programming automatic dehumidification parameters, the compressor differential adjustment, AC line voltage calibration as well as high and low pressure tests. Pretty good I think.

New From Yanmar

Yanmar Marine has come out with new range of electronic control diesel engines, designated as the 6LY3A-ETP. The electronic control gives constant power regulation in temperatures up to 50ºC, synchronises the engine speeds of twin and triple installations. The torque-inducing, high pressure, electronic governing fuel delivery system gives much improved fuel economy, an also reduces engine noise at idle, as well as smoke, including the familiar white smoke at start-up. The engine LCD display unit gives full run-time engine data, engine speed percentage load, running hours, battery voltage, coolant temperature, fuel use rate, fuel level (with optional fuel sensor), boost and oil pressures
