89 chevy 350 fitting 81 omc bellhousing

i have an 1989 rebuilt 350 and the flywheel is bigger than the 81 350 that it used to have in it.... i have an 81 omc outdrive ..i heard that i can grind out the bellhousing to make the new flywheel fit...has anyone done this before...does it work...thanks
