77 Mercruiser in line 6 fuel problems

Hello, my77 glastron 165hp after shut down suddenly started to start for a second and then stall out leaving me getting towed home. I replaced the fuel pump, and it ran for a few hours when it happened again! It has a inline fuel filter and a filter in the pump. What else could be the problem?

This is my first boat, but I have always done all my own mechanic work, the boat I just got wouldn't start unless you put gas in the carb, it also has the filter in the pump. other than all the preventative maintenance, I took the filter out of the pump put one in line between the tank and the pump, runs like charm. try to determine if it still getting gas when it dies, if it is, and has the old style coil, it could be your coil getting hot
