While running on the lake at 4k to 5k rpm, the oil pump link rod joint failed, causing my engine to overheat and alarm sounded. Shut down engine within 5 to 10 seconds after alarm sounded, and allowed it to cool while I reattached the link rod joint with a twist tie. After cooling down and the alarm stopped trying to sound, I started it and the engine ran normally back to the ramp, about 15 minutes away. However, the engine would not restart at the ramp, and wouldn't restart when I got it home. Is there a safety re-set procedure I need to perform to get it to start?

Oil may not be the problem . . .

I am wrong! If the linkage for the oil pump fails, it goes to WOT oil, so lack of oil didn't cause the engine to overheat. Thermostat maybe?

Did I damage my engine?
by: Derrick N

My worry is I may have damaged the engine running it back to the dock, as it refuses to restart now. What typically happens to a yamaha 2 stroke engine when it runs hot enough for the alarm to sound? The impeller (just recently installed new one) still pumped strong water stream after the event and engine note sounded normal on the trip to the dock.
