2001 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro and grey sludge around lower unit
2001 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro
Motor has low hours on it. Gas tank drained last fall and all new fuel added and treated with Marine Stabil. Boat started hard first time in driveway but started. Took boat fishing; some trolling but about a 5 mile run at almost WOT back to ramp. Boat stalled twice while trolling; no sputtering just shut off. Restarted without much issue. No loss of power at WOT compared to previous years. Noted oil/gas slick around motor while trolling and upon arrival at ramp. Removed boat, tilted up motor and substantial amount of grey/black sludge (looks like oil water mix) came out of prop exhaust area and crack between lower unit and middle body. Removed lower unit and water pump and top of lower unit covered in grey sludge. Grey sludge continued all the way up to bottom of power head. Smells more like gas than lower unit oil but hard to tell. Only right side of exhaust port of power head had sludge appearing to come out of it. Left side dry and clean. Lower unit oil drained and looked clean and not milky. Mechanic says "it sounds like a cracked head". Any thoughts as to what may be the cause? I know 2 strokes emit some unburned gas and oil but this is A LOT of sludge. I could smell gas at times while trolling. Is it possible for a lower unit leaky seal to send sludge all the way to the exhaust ports in the power head? If it's in the motor, any thoughts on possible causes? Hate to concede that it's "likely a cracked head" without exploring other options.
