1986 mercruiser alpha one 170hp temp sender grounding out

how do you keep sender from grounding out. It worked fine and was removed, mechanic told me it was bad and to purchase automotive sensor to save money. Did that and that doesnt work either. Dont understand how sender could have gone bad just from removing but now when put back in it grounds out |
