1977 36' trojan how to switch fuel to run just off of generator tanks

I am getting ready to run offshore for a 3 day fishing trip. What I want to do is fill my two tanks that run my generator which is a total of 80 gallons and go for a 4 hour sea trial then come back and fill those tanks back up to get a rough idea of my gas mileage. what i am not sure of is when i turn off my two main tanks do i turn my generator fuel tank to the on position or due i turn it to the off position to feed my engines fuel. any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
